The Closing Guide Series

AI Automation Agency Niche Selection

How to pick the right industry vertical so your AI agency closes faster and retains longer.

The Reframe

Selling AI to "businesses" isn't a niche. It's a prayer.

Every AI builder who says "I help businesses automate" is competing with 10,000 other people saying the exact same thing. Pick a lane or get outrun by someone who did.

The number one reason new AI agencies stall isn't skill. It's targeting. You built something impressive, posted about it online, and waited for inbound that never came. That's because nobody searches for "AI automation." They search for "how to speed up legal document review" or "automate restaurant inventory ordering."

When you pick a niche, three things happen immediately. Your outreach gets specific enough to earn replies. Your case studies compound because every new client looks like the last one. And your pricing goes up because you're no longer a generalist competing on hours.

The best niche isn't the biggest market. It's the one where you already have an edge: industry knowledge, a personal connection, or one good case study you can replicate ten times.

The Framework

The 3-filter niche test

Filter 1: Do they have budget?

Target industries where companies spend $500K+ annually and have operations teams. Legal, healthcare, real estate, logistics, and e-commerce all qualify. If you're pitching solopreneurs making $50K, you'll burn out before you break even.

Filter 2: Do they have repetitive pain?

Look for industries drowning in manual, repetitive tasks: data entry, document review, appointment scheduling, invoice processing. The more boring the task, the easier the sale. Nobody gets emotional about automating invoice follow-ups.

Filter 3: Can you reach the decision-maker?

Pick a niche where the buyer is accessible. Law firm partners are on LinkedIn. Restaurant owners are on Google Maps. Enterprise CTOs are behind gatekeepers. Start where the door is open.

Take Action

Your next 3 moves

  1. 1
List 3 industries where you have any advantage. Past job, a friend in the industry, one existing client. Rank them by which passes all three filters. That's your niche for the next 90 days.
  2. 2
Find 20 companies in that niche this week. Use LinkedIn, Google Maps, or industry directories. Write down the company name, the decision-maker's name, and one painful task they likely deal with daily.
  3. 3
Rewrite your one-liner for that niche. Replace "I build AI automations" with "I help [niche] eliminate [specific task] so they can [outcome]." Use this everywhere: LinkedIn, email, website.
